SL Sound Song

This SL sound song is one of a series of guruparents phonics songs.

The song introduces the diagraph by featuring 12 words starting with sl, including some sight words.

Children who have learned the sounds made by the letters “s” and “l” will typically be able to sound out “sl” and read it correctly. So what is the point of this “sl” video?

The answer is twofold.

Firstly, it comes down to speed. By being able to instantly recognize “sl” and the sound it makes a child’s reading will be ever so slightly faster.

This is important when teaching your child to read because one of your main jobs is to avoid children falling into the trap of thinking reading is boring. Children who can read at a good speed are more likely to get caught up in the excitement of a book and fall in love with reading, rather than get bogged down and lose interest.

Secondly, the “l” sound is just about the most difficult sound to form in the entire language. However, the “sl” sound is one of the easier varieties of “l” so by practising this sound using this phonics song children will be able to gain confidence in correctly pronouncing a difficult letter.
