Silent K Song

This Silent K song is one of a series of guruparents phonics songs.

The song introduces silent k by featuring 12 words starting with kn, including some sight words.

Kids songs are a good way for a child to start to learn to read – and this one is set to a catchy rap tune, features lots of colorful pictures and has a simple rhyming pattern. It is also a good song to introduce the silent k concept for someone who is learning English.

To adults proficient in English it is instinctively obvious that ‘kn’ is pronounced as ‘n’ in words such as knock, knife, knit and kneel. However, to children learning to read, the existence of silent k is yet another quirk of English that can make things harder.

By being able to recognize that when a word starts with ‘kn’ an ‘n’ sound is made, a child will avoid the confusion and frustration of trying to make a ‘kuh-nuh’ sound, and their reading speed will be that little bit faster.

Speed is, of course, vital, not least because the sooner a child learns to read at a reasonable pace, the sooner they will be able to read books purely for pleasure – one of the hallmarks of a good student!
