Long Division Video

This video shows you how to do long division.

The purpose of the video is to give parents a quick refresher on how to do long division so that when their child starts learning long division at school they are able to help.

If you can do short division then you should find the long division method a piece of cake. The key is to remember that the simple process to be followed is: Divide, Multiply, Subtract, Compare and Bring down.

A simple mnemonic such as “Does McDonalds Make Cheeseburgers” (followed by “Bring down”) can be useful if you or your child struggle to remember the order of what to do.

The most challenging aspect of the process is the “Divide” section – especially when you are dividing by a two-digit number.

Rather than being intimidated by this process, we encourage parents and children to enjoy the detective work that sometimes needs to be done to get the correct answer.

In the video we explore one method you can use to make a good guess as to the answer – and how to refine this guess.

It is important to remember that even if you choose the wrong number it will be okay – when you get to the “Compare” step you will realize you have made an error – and then you can simply go back and have another try.
