Hundreds Chart Multiplication Patterns

Teaching your child multiplication is a task made easier with the use of a hundreds chart. The hundreds chart can be used as a way to introduce the concept of multiplication or to reinforce multiplication levels.

Below we've highlighted the patterns for each of the times tables and provided some discussion points. Unfortunately there isn't an easy way for kids to memorise their times tables. However perhaps showing children the times tables on a hundreds chart might give them another way to remember the distinct features of the times tables.

One Times Table

1 times table pattern on hundreds chart
  • The multiples appear as a row across the bottom of the hundreds chart.
  • The products of each multiplication equation appears one space to the right of the previous answer.

Two Times Table

2 times table pattern on hundreds chart
  • There are five shaded columns that are separated by an unshaded column.
  • Only even numbers are shaded.
  • The products of each multiplication equation appears two spaces to the right of the previous answer.

Three Times Table

3 times table pattern on hundreds chart
  • The multiples appear as 3 diagonal lines across the hundreds chart.
  • The products of each multiplication equation appears three spaces to the right of the previous answer.
  • The bottom row has four shaded squares but then is followed by three rows of three shaded squares.

Four Times Table

4 times table pattern on hundreds chart
  • The multiples appear in the first row, and every other row after that.
  • The products of each multiplication equation appears four spaces to the right of the previous answer.
  • Only even numbers are shaded.

Five Times Table

5 times table pattern on hundreds chart
  • Only the first and the sixth columns are shaded.
  • The products of each multiplication equation appears five spaces to the right of the previous answer.
  • Only squares containing a 0 or 5 are shaded.

Six Times Table

6 times table pattern on hundreds chart
  • Each row contains a maximum of 2 shaded answers. Every third row only contains one answer.
  • The products of each multiplication equation appears six spaces to the right of the previous answer.
  • Only even numbers are shaded.

Seven Times Table

7 times table pattern on hundreds chart
  • Every second row features two shaded answers, every other row features one.
  • The products of each multiplication equation appears seven spaces to the right of the previous answer.

Eight Times Table

8 times table pattern on hundreds chart
  • The multiples appear as 2 longer diagonal lines across the hundreds chart.
  • Only even numbers are shaded.
  • The products of each multiplication equation appears eight spaces to the right of the previous answer.

Nine Times Table

9 times table pattern on hundreds chart
  • All shaded answers except the first and last appear as a diagonal line.
  • The products of each multiplication equation appears nine spaces to the right of the previous answer.
  • The digits for each answer (except the first and last) sum to nine.
  • Ten Times Table10 times table pattern on hundreds chart

    • All shaded answers appear in the first column.
    • Only squares ending in 0 are shaded
    • The products of each multiplication equation appears ten spaces to the right of the previous answer.
