The double e construct is one of the most useful phonemes for children to learn. The rule applies in the majority of instances – and even in words like ‘steer’ and ‘cheer’, where depending on the speaker’s accent it could be argued the rule doesn’t quite apply, the sound is still close enough that children knowing this rule should be able to work out what the word is.
Along with the ‘ea’ sound and the effect of a silent e, the double e sound rule is an important next step beyond merely ‘sounding out’ unfamiliar words.
Once familiar with this rule, young readers will find their reading vocabularies have expanded rapidly – with words such as ‘freeze’, ‘kneel’, ‘speed’ and ‘been’ suddenly becoming accessible – not to mention hundreds and hundreds of others!
